Tape base is a coating substrate, so what matters is how it behaves under the adhesive line: low air permeability so the coating stays on the surface, elongation and ductility so the tape conforms, and enough heat resistance to survive curing and use.
The range spans roughly 30 to 80 g/m². Light washi and masking constructions sit at the bottom of that band — a 42 g/m² washi base runs around 0.69 g/cm³ tightness, 61 µm thickness and 2.8 kN/m MD tensile. High-strength packaging tape base sits at 70 – 80 g/m², reaching 4.2 – 4.8 kN/m MD tensile and a burst index of 3.2 – 3.5 kPa·m²/g.
